Lace, linen and hand-dyeing

One of my all-time favourite Sunday afternoon past-times is hand-dyeing fabric. (I’m currently into lace). Sham Shui Po is the place to find fabric – I’ve bought lace ribbons, lace fabrics and lace collars. I buy it in cream or black (only colours available) and then I make use of any organic goods I have at home, coffee, tea, roses and start blending and steeping – I’ve created a romantic tea-stained hue, a beetroot pink and a milk chocolate from coffee. As well as using vegetables such as beetroot and pumpkins which are a wonderfully natural way to transform fabrics too.

Struggling to find time to DIY dyeing? Head over to Hong Kong Johnson Lace Co, 230 Ki Lung Street, Sham Shui Po, Tel: +852 2386 4088. They will tackle any project as long as it’s a natural fibre (linen, cotton, etc) and match any shade. Now for a revealing secret – there are bins at the front of the lace shops in Sham Shui Po that can often contain entirely amazing and heavily discounted lace discards. Don’t be shy to rifle through them. Sometimes you can pick up a one-off beautiful piece.

Linen tablecloths and napkins are hand dyed in pastel ombre shades. If you are interested in any of these products please E-mail admin@stylebriefhongkong.com for price and availability.

Hi. I’m looking for a pro to dye my white dress to something darker like dark blue or maroon. Would you know if the HK Johnson Lace Co still provides these services?
    Thanks
    Sai

    Hi Ingrid,

I am currently looking for the perfect lace to make myself a dress. I love the geometrical ones you present on the first picture (I am not so much into the flowery laces we see in most of the shops), would you have some shops to recommend in the Sham Shui Po area?

    Thanks for your help,
    Cha

I can source you the geometric lace if you like. AS the shop I used to source lace from has now moved. If you want me to find you some just let me know. x Ingrid

    Hi ingrid

I have a white dress I would like dyed to blue/grey. Similar colour to one of your sample images. Could you do this?

If so what’s the next step and cost?

    Kind regards

Hi Ingrid, I wondered if you could help. Do you know of a place that will dye a dress from cream/white to a dark colour like dark blue or black? Many thanks. Dress is Viscose-type material.

      Hi Alison,
It is hard to dye viscose or poly. They just don’t dye well. If your dress is cotton or silk I can help you. Thanks Ingrid
